The treasures of the Vapriikki photo archive

A mini exhibition of the Vapriikki Photo Archive is on display in the Vapriikki conference corridor, presenting digital collections open to the public.

Through the Siiri information service, the Vapriikki Photo Archive will make around 200 000 digitised images freely available to everyone. Most of them can be downloaded in high-resolution, i.e. large, print-quality image files. Vapriikki’s Photo archive has the largest collection of photographs of Tampere and Pirkanmaa, providing a comprehensive picture of life from the 1850s to the present day.

The images are licensed under CC BY 4.0. This means that the images are freely available to everyone, and can be redistributed, edited and published, provided that when the images are published, the source is indicated as the Vapriikki Image Archive and the name of the photographer, if known. The images can therefore be downloaded and used freely and free of charge not only online and in applications, but also in books, exhibitions, presentations and gift items, for example.

The Freeport Image Archive is not among the first to open its holdings, but in terms of quantity, it is an internationally significant body of work. The Vapriikki Photo Archive has around two million photographs in its collections, which means that the majority of the collections are still not digitised. Even these images are still available to customers and can be consulted in the Photo Archive. The number of images is also constantly being digitised, which means that the number of freely accessible images is constantly growing.
