The Immortal Game - A new age of chess

The Immortal Game - A new age of chess is an exhibition that examines chess as a modern-day phenomenon from three different perspectives: chess as science, a form of art and competition.

The exhibition considers why chess has become such a major phenomenon in recent years. It provides background information in the form of a short overview of the history of chess, and brings out the multiple facets of chess culture.

The science of chess is on display through the various methods of analysing moves and games, among other things. Chess as art is discussed by way of aesthetics as well as the game boards and pieces, while bearing in mind the impacts of media and literature. Competitive chess is brought out as an e-sport, and the impact of the Internet on playing chess is examined. The exhibition also looks at how time limits affect the game.

Visitors to the Finnish Museum of Games can play chess while visiting the exhibition; various events that engage the public will also be arranged after the opening.

The exhibition will open in the Finnish Museum of Games’ Studio on Thursday, 14 November 2024.
