Odysseus – The Story of a LARP

The exhibition Odysseus – The Story of a LARP, created in collaboration between the Odysseus team and the Finnish Museum of Games, dives into the story of Odysseus and how the game was built. Photos, videos, objects and stories take the visitors to the world of Odysseus, offering a peek behind the scenes of the game project.

The story of the Odysseus LARP takes place more than 800 years in the future, in a distant star system where a human colony has been attacked by a race of machines which is led by artificial intelligence. While escaping the superior enemy, the players need to consider difficult questions about humanity and survival. During the voyage, they also receive more information on their past and on how it is intertwined with the machines.

Odysseus was an exceptional LARP even on an international scale; it was arranged for the first time in 2019 and again, as an updated version, in the summer of 2024. Organised by more than 200 volunteers, the game garnered massive interest and brought players from more than 25 countries into Helsinki. The design work culminated in the construction stage, during which an entire spaceship set was built at Torpparinmäki comprehensive school in Helsinki. The sounds, lights, furniture and seamless control systems took the players on an incredible journey through space that lasted for more than two days.
